Urgent Call to End Gaza Conflict as Heartrending Videos Show Emaciated Israeli Hostages

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening, united in their plea for the release of hostages still being held captive in Gaza. The rally was spurred by the release of harrowing videos displaying the emaciated state of two Israeli hostages, Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski.

In one of the videos, released by militant groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad this week, David, visibly weakened, is depicted digging his own grave. A portion of this video featuring David was shown at the rally, after his family granted permission for its public viewing on a large screen.

The hostages in Gaza number approximately fifty, with at least twenty believed to be alive. The militant groups released these videos at a critical juncture, as ceasefire negotiations remain stalled and Palestinians grapple with a mounting starvation crisis within the enclave. According to health officials, thirteen people have died from malnutrition in the past 48 hours, including one child, bringing the total death toll due to starvation since the conflict began in 2023 to 175.

At the rally, Ofir Braslavski, Rom’s father, expressed his distress, stating that he did not recognize his son in the video. “My Rom is emaciated, dehydrated, sick, and broken both physically and mentally,” he said. “I address you, Prime Minister Netanyahu: Enough! The piecemeal approach to negotiations has failed.”

“Make the decision already – end the war and bring everyone back. The hostages, the fallen soldiers, the fighters, the reservists, and those displaced from their homes. We want to heal, to return to normalcy, to breathe,” he added.

Earlier on Saturday, Steve Witkoff, the United States’ special envoy to the Middle East, met with around 40 representatives of hostage families in Tel Aviv. This meeting followed Witkoff’s visit to a controversial US-backed aid distribution site in Gaza Strip the previous day.

During the meeting, Witkoff reportedly emphasized that ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas should be “all or nothing,” with all fifty hostages in Gaza being returned to Israel simultaneously, as per the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

The hostage families, who have consistently expressed concern that ongoing fighting in Gaza endangers their loved ones, called for an immediate end to the war and a comprehensive deal ensuring the release of the remaining hostages on Saturday.

“Amidst the harrowing footage and disturbing reports about the condition of the hostages – hostage families will cry out today in the heart of Tel Aviv,” a statement from Israel’s hostage families read. “We appeal to the Israeli government and the US administration – look our loved ones – and us – in the eyes.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu held discussions with the families of the hostages on Saturday evening, expressing profound shock over the distressing images released by the militants. He assured the families that efforts to bring all hostages back home are ongoing and will continue unabated.

On Friday, the armed wing of Hamas published an undated video showing 24-year-old David, who was taken captive at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, being held in a confined space. This video juxtaposed images of starving Palestinian children with footage of David.

On Saturday, Hamas released a longer version of this video featuring David. A similar propaganda video was published by Palestinian Islamic Jihad on Thursday showing Braslavski also in a weakened state. Islamic Jihad claimed that the video was the last one taken before they lost contact with the militants holding him in July.

Earlier this week, a UN-backed food security agency issued a warning stating that the “worst case scenario of famine” is unfolding in Gaza, marking their most severe alert yet as Israel faces increasing international pressure to allow more food into the territory.

Hospitals across Gaza Strip are struggling with overcapacity, with bed occupancy exceeding 200% at several facilities, according to the enclave’s health ministry. Beds are being placed in corridors and on floors to accommodate increasing numbers of patients and casualties.

The Palestinian health ministry reported that at least thirty-nine people were killed and over eight hundred injured in a 24-hour period while waiting for aid in various parts of the territory.
