Brazil’s Supreme Court Orders House Arrest for Former President Jair Bolsonaro Over Election Allegations
The Brazilian Supreme Court has mandated that former President Jair Bolsonaro, currently embroiled in trial over an alleged scheme to subvert the 2022 presidential election results, switch to house arrest.
On Monday, Justice Alexandre de Moraes sanctioned this decision, citing Bolsonaro’s non-compliance with earlier court-imposed restrictions, such as limiting his social media and cellphone usage.
The order stated that Bolsonaro had recorded speeches intended for posting on other users’ social media platforms, violating a prohibition against the “exploitation of interviews or public/private speeches posted on third parties’ social media.”
Bolsonaro will now serve his house arrest at his residence and will be restricted from hosting visitors, excluding his legal counsel and individuals granted by the court.
