Trump Endorses JD Vance as Potential MAGA Heir Apparent; Suggests Joint Republican Ticket With Marco Rubio
In a recent development, President Donald Trump indicated that Vice President JD Vance could be the potential successor of the “Make America Great Again” movement, marking his most explicit endorsement yet for Vance as a future presidential contender.
Trump further suggested a possible Republican ticket pairing Vance with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the future. In response to questions about Vance’s status within the MAGA movement, Trump stated, “Well, I think most likely [Vance is MAGA’s successor]. In fairness, he holds the position of Vice President.”
Regarding a potential collaboration between the two, Trump added, “I think Marco is also somebody that might team up with JD in some capacity. I also believe we have remarkable individuals, several of whom are present on this stage today.”
Joining Trump on Tuesday were Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who is rumored to harbor political aspirations, and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
On Vance’s potential presidential bid, Trump expressed, “It’s premature, of course, to discuss such matters, but certainly he’s excelling in his role, and he would likely be the front-runner at this point.”
Last month, Rubio downplayed speculation regarding a 2028 presidential run by stating that Vance would make an “excellent nominee.” In a conversation with Lara Trump, President Trump’s daughter-in-law on Fox News, Rubio commented, “I think he’s doing an exceptional job as Vice President. He’s a close friend and I hope he intends to run, but it’s still quite early.”
Rubio has not definitively ruled out his own presidential aspirations, stating, “You never know what the future holds.”
In the past, Trump has refrained from endorsing any potential successor for 2028. In February, he described Vance as “very capable” but emphasized that it was too early to name him as the front-runner. Previous reports by CNN suggest that Vance’s performance as a key diplomat and top surrogate advocating for Trump’s foreign policy has significantly boosted his influence within the second Trump administration.
Aside from being former rivals, Rubio and Vance have developed a strong working relationship since their time in office. “Marco is exceptionally competent and dependable, and he’s also one of my closest friends in the administration,” Vance told CNN last month.
