UK Set to Begin Returning Migrants to France Within Days: Key Part of Plan to Curb Illegal Immigration
The United Kingdom will initiate the implementation of a migrant return deal with France within days, marking a significant step towards curbing illegal immigration. The agreement is set to be ratified on Tuesday following the signing of a treaty last week.
Under the terms of this agreement, France has agreed to accept undocumented immigrants arriving in Britain via small boats, on the condition that the UK accepts an equal number of legitimate asylum seekers with British family ties. This arrangement, dubbed the “one-for-one” pilot scheme, was announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron last month.
As of 2025, more than 25,000 individuals have arrived in Britain via small boats. To address this issue, Starmer has vowed to dismantle the criminal networks responsible for facilitating these crossings.
Starmer’s popularity has waned since his landslide election victory last year, and he now faces pressure from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which leads national opinion polls. In recent weeks, England has witnessed protests near hotels housing asylum seekers who arrived via small boats, with both anti-immigration and pro-immigration groups participating.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau stated that the new agreement between the countries aims to dismantle people-smuggling networks. However, British Interior Minister Yvette Cooper declined to specify the exact number of individuals who would be returned under the scheme, stating only that the numbers will start low and increase over time.
These returns will primarily target individuals who have recently arrived on small boats, rather than those already residing in Britain. Initial estimates suggest that approximately 50 returns per week, or around 2,600 annually, are anticipated under the agreement. Critics argue that this scale is insufficient to serve as a deterrent, but the government maintains that the agreement with France is part of a broader strategy to combat illegal immigration.
In addition to this agreement, the government has imposed sanctions on people smugglers, restricted social media ads related to migration, and collaborated with delivery firms to address illegal work offered to migrants.
