Army Sergeant Charged After Shooting at Fort Stewart Military Base Leaves Five Soldiers Wounded

A sergeant stationed in the U.S. Army was detained on Wednesday following an incident at Fort Stewart military base in Georgia, where he allegedly opened fire, injuring five of his fellow soldiers. The suspect, identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, is currently under investigation for the shooting.

Radford, aged 28, was apprehended by nearby soldiers after they intervened and subdued him following the incident. The injured soldiers are reportedly in stable condition. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this time.

The shooting is one of over 260 mass shootings that have occurred in the United States so far this year, according to records from the Gun Violence Archive. This latest incident comes shortly after separate shootings in Midtown Manhattan and a rural Montana bar that resulted in multiple fatalities.

On Tuesday, Radford is believed to have had a dispute with one of the shooting victims. The altercation took place prior to the shooting, which occurred in a maintenance area where Radford shot five coworkers, including the individual he reportedly disagreed with earlier in the day. The nature of their disagreement has yet to be disclosed.

The swift actions taken by fellow soldiers prevented further casualties, allowing law enforcement to take Radford into custody shortly after the incident.

Radford’s father, Eddie Radford, expressed shock and confusion over the shooting, telling reporters that he hadn’t noticed any unusual behavior from his son recently and was unaware of what might have motivated the attack. He also mentioned that his son had complained about racial issues at Fort Stewart and had been seeking a transfer.

The U.S. Army’s Fort Stewart trains and deploys both active and reserve Army units. The shooting took place in an area housing the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, known as the Spartan Brigade. This unit was first constituted in North Carolina during World War I and has since undergone various transformations, participating in key American maneuvers and deployments throughout history.

The shooting occurred at approximately 10:56 a.m. ET on Wednesday. The base was promptly placed on lockdown, and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to treat the injured soldiers shortly after. Three of the victims required surgery, according to authorities. Radford was apprehended by law enforcement at around 11:35 a.m., and the lockdown was lifted approximately 35 minutes later.

Since the incident, Radford has been interviewed by the Army Criminal Investigation Division and is currently in pretrial confinement as the Office of the Special Trial Counsel considers potential charges. The well-being of the victims and the community at Fort Stewart remains a top priority for military officials.
