Massive Wildfire Rages Through Southern France, Claims One Life, Injures Nine as Over 11,000 Hectares Burn
In the south of France, an aggressive wildfire has charred over 11,000 hectares across 15 municipalities, according to regional authorities. The tragic loss of one life was reported in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, where an elderly woman perished, apparently choosing not to evacuate her home.
“We are saddened by the death of an elderly resident in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse who refused to abandon her home,” said Remy Recio, a local official, speaking to BFMTV, a CNN affiliate.
The blaze ignited Tuesday afternoon in Ribaute, Aude department, and has resulted in injuries for two civilians and seven firefighters, as per Recio’s update.
Overnight, approximately 1,500 firefighters fought valiantly against the inferno, with an additional 320 reinforcements arriving on Wednesday.
Aerial operations resumed at dawn on Wednesday, utilizing four Canadair water bombers, a heavy-lift helicopter capable of carrying four tons of water, and four DASH aircraft to aid ground crews in their efforts.
“Preliminary estimates suggest that around thirty vehicles were destroyed and approximately 25 homes impacted by the flames. Over 2,500 homes currently lack electricity,” stated the Aude prefecture in a press release on Wednesday. “The fire remains highly active, with unfavorable weather conditions persisting until August 6.”
