Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas: Acrylic Waterslide Breaks, Injures Passenger, Investigation Ensues
A waterslide made from acrylic material onboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas experienced a breakdown on Thursday, resulting in an injury to one passenger and the creation of a substantial gap in the slide’s lower portion.
In a statement released by the company, a representative from the Royal Caribbean Group reported, “Medical attention was administered to an adult guest following the dislodgement of acrylic glass from a water slide during the guest’s passage through it.”
The affected individual is currently receiving treatment for their injuries. The waterslide has been closed temporarily while an investigation ensues. The guest’s condition is stable at present.
Footage obtained by onlookers after the slide fractured reveals a stream of water gushing from a hole in a vibrant section of the slide that arches over the deck.
According to information available on Royal Caribbean’s website, Icon of the Seas boasts six waterslides as part of a waterpark named Category 6, claimed to be the “largest at sea.” This waterpark is situated on decks 16 and 17 of the colossal vessel, currently recognized as the world’s largest operational cruise ship.
Icon of the Seas set sail on its inaugural voyage in January 2024. Capable of accommodating close to 10,000 people at full capacity.
