Texas Real Estate Magnate Killed by Cape Buffalo During Trophy Hunting Expedition in South Africa

Texas real estate mogul Asher Watkins, an avid trophy hunter, met a tragic end during a hunting expedition in South Africa when he was attacked by a Cape buffalo. According to Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CVS), the incident was unexpected and unprovoked.

Watkins had been tracking a prized bull when the large horned beast initiated the attack.

Hans Vermaak, leader of CVS, issued a statement, saying “During a hunting expedition with one of our professional hunters and trackers, Asher Watkins was fatally injured in an unprovoked attack by a Cape buffalo that he had been tracking.”

The incident left the family and CVS staff members in shock. In respect for the family’s privacy as well as those involved, further details were not disclosed.

Watkins and his family were considered close friends of CVS. In a statement, Vermaak also expressed condolences, saying “Our thoughts are with Asher Watkins’ family during this difficult time.”

Cape buffalo are renowned as one of the most dangerous game animals for trophy hunters worldwide. According to CVS, no animal carries a more fearsome reputation than a Cape buffalo.

Each year, several deaths and many injuries are attributed to these animals. Known as the most dangerous to pursue in Africa, if not the world, they have earned this title for good reason.

The manner of Watkins’ death – being killed by the very animal he sought to hunt – has sparked discussions among animal rights groups and activists regarding the ethics of trophy hunting.

PETA, an animal rights group, expressed their sentiments on Instagram, stating “Asher Watkins embarked on a luxury hunting trip in South Africa where he pursued a Cape buffalo. The frightened animal retaliated when cornered. Animals are not trophies or wall decorations. Trophy hunting must cease!”

A comment under the post reading “cheers to the buffalo” has garnered thousands of likes.

As a leading figure in Watkins Ranch Group, Asher Watkins oversaw multimillion-dollar properties across Texas, Colorado, and Arkansas. A lifelong outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, according to his company biography, he leaves behind his mother Gwen, daughter Savannah, brother Amon, and stepfather Tony.
