Sen. Bernie Sanders Speaks Out Against Trump’s Alleged Attempt to Rig Elections through Redistricting, Calls for Democratic Response

In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash last Friday in Wheeling, West Virginia, Senator Bernie Sanders addressed several critical issues, including the ongoing redistricting fight, Israel’s actions in Gaza, the potential 2028 presidential election, and his perspective on the Democratic Party’s perceived abandonment of its base.

During the interview, Sanders commented on the Texas Republicans’ redistricting plan, which he described as an attempt by President Donald Trump to manipulate the system in favor of the Republican Party. He stressed the need for Democrats to respond to such actions, stating, “If Republicans are doing it, you have to respond.”

The progressive senator is currently touring the country as part of his “Fighting Oligarchy” campaign, where he has been rallying support against the Trump administration. Guests at these events have included Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke.

In West Virginia, a state that overwhelmingly voted for Trump, Sanders argued that the Democratic Party has neglected the working class. He accused former Vice President Kamala Harris of prioritizing the interests of wealthy donors over those of working families during her 2024 presidential bid. Sanders referred to Harris as a “friend of mine,” but expressed concerns about her campaign’s reliance on wealthy advisors.

Regarding the potential 2028 presidential race, Sanders noted his age but expressed confidence that a candidate would emerge who could carry on the progressive mantle within the Democratic Party. Without naming names, he suggested there are several promising young individuals who could fill this role.

Turning to international affairs, Sanders criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a really awful guy,” citing Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting destruction. However, he expressed a desire for peace, provided any agreement does not undermine Ukraine’s interests.

On the issue of Israel’s actions in Gaza, Sanders, who is Jewish, argued that Israel had a right to defend itself after the terrorist attack from Hamas, but accused the country of waging war against the entire Palestinian people since then. He also criticized US arms sales to Israel, stating, “I think Republicans at a grassroots level are also catching on that it is not a great idea to provide billions to a government that starves children.”

Sanders has long been critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting that Israel’s actions have made it almost a pariah state. He also expressed concerns about the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin, urging caution to ensure any agreement does not compromise Ukraine’s interests.
