Trump Meets with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Reverses Call for Resignation After Controversial Week
In a significant development, President Donald Trump revealed on his Truth Social platform that he recently met with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and members of his cabinet, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The encounter took place following Trump’s previous call for Tan to step down from his role at the chipmaker. Following the meeting, Intel’s shares rose by 2% in extended trading.
In his post, President Trump acknowledged Tan’s impressive trajectory, stating, “The meeting was a very interesting one… Mr. Tan and my Cabinet members are going to spend time together, and bring suggestions to me during the next week.”
At the time of writing, Intel had yet to issue a response to this development.
Tan joined Intel’s board in 2022, and assumed the role of CEO from Pat Gelsinger in March. Recently, Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) raised concerns about Tan’s ties to China, citing a past criminal case involving Cadence Design, where Tan had previously served as CEO.
Last week, Trump publicly criticized Tan, stating on Truth Social that he should resign “immediately.” However, Trump’s latest post appears to mark a shift in tone, as he acknowledged Tan’s contributions and the potential for further collaboration between Tan and members of his cabinet.
In response to earlier criticism, Intel had released a statement asserting its commitment to advancing U.S. national and economic security interests.
