Denzel Washington’s Financial Dilemma in Spike Lee’s Latest Film Highest 2 Lowest: Balancing Legacy, Art, and Commerce Amid Tech Disruption
In an interview with CNN, Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington reflected on his past money-driven roles, citing his mother’s advice that one must work to achieve their desires rather than the other way around. The reflection was prompted by his role as a music mogul in Spike Lee’s latest film, “Highest 2 Lowest.”
Washington recalled working on projects during the mid-90s to support his family, including films like “Crimson Tide,” “Philadelphia,” and “The Pelican Brief.” While some of these may have been less successful, others such as “He Got Game” and “Malcolm X” were critical and commercial successes.
Washington’s children, John David, Olivia, Malcolm, and Katia, have all followed in their father’s footsteps, establishing careers in acting, film direction, and production respectively.
“Highest 2 Lowest” marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee. The script, a modern adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s classic “High To Low,” was brought to Lee by Washington, marking their first collaboration since 2006’s “Inside Man.”
The film revolves around Washington’s character, record executive David King, who is caught in a ransom plot. Believing his son has been kidnapped, he learns that the kidnapper has mistakenly taken the son of his chauffeur, Paul (played by Jeffrey Wright). Faced with the decision to pay the ransom and potentially drain his bank accounts, King must grapple with the moral implications of saving a child who isn’t his own.
Interestingly, David King shares some characteristics with Spike Lee, both being cultural icons grappling with their legacies and the intersection of art and commerce in an era of technological disruption. However, while Lee has embraced the new players in the industry, King is wary of the impact of technology on music and society.
Discussing the negative effects of social media and AI-generated music, Jeffrey Wright expressed concerns that these technologies have not brought about the harmony, democracy, and peace they were promised. Washington, however, remains detached from such concerns, stating that he does not rely on these platforms for his happiness or peace.
The acting legend, who became a minister at the end of 2024, has entered a period of contentment, reflecting on fame and filmmaking with aphorisms. He warned about the dangers of over-exposure in Hollywood, advising young actors like Michael B. Jordan to maintain their privacy.
“Highest 2 Lowest” is set for release in US cinemas on August 15 before debuting on a yet-to-be-announced streaming platform.
