Hong Kong Court Adjourns National Security Trial of Media Mogul Jimmy Lai Over Health Concerns Amidst Protests and International Scrutiny

The national security trial for media mogul Jimmy Lai was postponed on Friday due to health concerns raised by his defense team. Lai, a prominent advocate for democracy and founder of the defunct Apple Daily, appeared noticeably thinner during the hearing, which was delayed from Thursday due to inclement weather.

In court on Friday morning, Lai’s attorney Robert Pang SC informed the judges that the 77-year-old had experienced episodes where he felt like he might collapse and had been experiencing heart palpitations. Despite undergoing a medical examination, prison staff have yet to provide him with medication and a Holter monitor, according to Pang.

Prosecutors assured that a team of medical professionals was on standby at the court to address Lai’s medical needs. However, Judge Alex Lee deemed it prudent not to commence the hearing until Lai’s health concerns were addressed, and adjourned the session until Monday.

Jimmy Lai’s son Sebastien Lai expressed deep concern about his father’s declining health ahead of the hearing, citing his age, diabetes, prolonged solitary confinement, and the harsh summer temperatures in Hong Kong. He described his father’s prolonged solitary confinement as akin to torture.

The Hong Kong government denounced what it called “misleading statements” about Lai’s treatment while in custody. It stated that Sebastien Lai’s comments regarding Lai Chee-ying’s solitary confinement were distorted, suggesting a malicious intent to smear and attack the HKSAR Government. The government added that Lai had requested his removal from the general prison population.

The closing arguments of Lai’s trial are expected to span several days, with a verdict potentially weeks or even months away. Lai faces two counts of colluding with foreign forces – an offense punishable by life imprisonment under the 2020 national security law enacted by Beijing – and a separate sedition charge. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Lai’s vocal advocacy for democracy, particularly through Apple Daily – a tabloid newspaper known for its relentless criticism of the Chinese Communist Party over many years – has made him a symbol of China’s wide-reaching national security crackdown in the once vibrant financial hub of Hong Kong.

Previous statements by former US President Donald Trump indicated his intention to secure Lai’s release and mentioned that discussions regarding Lai’s fate were part of ongoing negotiations with Beijing. Trump stated, “I’m going to be bringing it up, and I’ve already brought it up, and I’m going to do everything I can to save him.” He also acknowledged that China’s leader Xi Jinping might not be pleased by such actions but emphasized that Lai’s case had been discussed within ongoing negotiations.
