Liverpool’s Emotional Tribute to Diogo Jota Marks Premier League Kickoff, as New Signings Shine in 1-0 Win
The much-anticipated new Premier League campaign commenced at Anfield on a sunny Friday, as fans paid emotional tributes to the late Liverpool star Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away with his brother André Silva in a car crash earlier this summer. The crowd displayed their grief and admiration for Jota through various means during the opening match against Bournemouth.
Banners, signs, balloons, and scarves adorned with Jota’s name, image, and jersey number 20 were held aloft by the audience, who united to sing Liverpool’s iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The somber atmosphere was palpable as fans sang, with Mohamed Salah looking skyward during the emotional rendition.
The stadium announcer requested a moment of silence in memory of “our forever 20” and his brother on July 3. Liverpool players stood united, their arms draped over each other’s shoulders, as the crowd displayed a mosaic sign in the stands spelling out “DJ 20” and “AS 30,” in colors reminiscent of Portugal’s flag.
A black-and-white image of the brothers was shown on the video boards as players bowed their heads during the moment of silence.
The game commenced with fervor, and in the 20th minute, fans across the ground stood, clapped synchronously, and chanted in honor of their beloved forward, Jota. The match saw both teams’ players and coaches wearing black armbands.
Liverpool fans also remembered Jota during last weekend’s Community Shield game.
With a significantly revamped squad, the reigning Premier League champions are poised to defend their title. Notable new acquisitions include Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike from the Bundesliga, as well as defender Milos Kerkez. Ekitike made an indelible mark on his Anfield debut by scoring in the 37th minute, giving the home side a 1-0 lead. In homage to Jota, Ekitike held up his fingers to form the number 20.
The Slot-led club claimed the title in its inaugural season and aims to guide Liverpool to their first repeat crown in over four decades.
