Trump and Putin Meet in Alaska: Discussing Ukraine Conflict, Potential Land Swaps, and Peace Negotiations

In Anchorage, Alaska, the historic encounter between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin takes place today, with the American leader engaging in diplomacy with a world figure ostracized by the West due to his aggressive actions in Ukraine.

During his 2024 campaign, Trump had promised an expedient resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Expressing optimism ahead of the Anchorage summit, he highlighted his rapport with Putin, stating, “He’s shrewd, he’s been at it for a long time, but so have I. We share mutual respect.”

The meeting between the two leaders is scheduled to commence at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, on the outskirts of Anchorage, at 11 a.m. Alaska Time (3 p.m. ET). Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Thursday that a joint press conference would follow the conclusion of the summit.

Trump indicated his readiness to discuss business and trade matters with Putin; however, he made it clear that any expansion of commercial ties would be contingent upon the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. “They’re eager to negotiate, but only once the war is resolved,” Trump declared.

He also warned Putin of potential severe repercussions if progress was not achieved in ending the war. “I’m not doing this for personal gain, understand,” Trump stated. “I want to focus on our nation, but I’m taking on this challenge to save countless lives.”

European leaders who have supported Ukraine in its battle against Russia held discussions with Trump on Wednesday, urging Putin to commit to a ceasefire and guarantee the security of Ukraine before any peace negotiations ensue.

On Friday, Trump expressed openness to providing security assurances for Ukraine “alongside Europe and other nations,” but clarified that such measures would not entail Ukraine joining NATO.

Prior to the summit, discussions arose regarding a potential land swap between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly expressed opposition to surrendering territory, as such action would violate his country’s constitution.

During the flight, Trump acknowledged that talks about exchanging land would transpire; however, he reiterated that the ultimate decision lay with Ukraine. He views Friday’s meeting as a precursor to broader negotiations between Putin and Zelenskyy.

“I leave it to Ukraine to make their decision,” Trump said. “And I believe they will make an informed choice. But remember, I’m not here to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine. I’m here to bring them to the table.”
