Ukraine’s Zelensky Returns to White House for Critical Talks on Peace Deal Amidst US-Russia Tensions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit the White House on Monday for discussions with President Donald Trump following the latter’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The meeting comes six months after Zelensky’s previous visit, which ended abruptly and saw him criticized by his US hosts.
During their initial meeting in February, Trump told Zelensky, “You don’t have the cards.” The outcome of the recent summit with Putin remains unclear, with European leaders expressing concerns about Trump’s stance on a ceasefire and Russian territorial demands.
Trump’s attitude towards Ukraine has raised eyebrows among European leaders. He reportedly suggested to European officials that Putin had not abandoned his demand for the entire eastern Donbas region, implying a quick resolution if Zelensky agreed to concede. However, Trump’s openness to providing US security guarantees after the conflict ends offers some hope to European officials.
The details of these guarantees remain unknown. The discussions in the Oval Office are expected to be significant, as Trump has previously promised a swift resolution to the conflict.
In the intervening period, relations between Trump and Zelensky have improved. They have met twice since their initial meeting, first in Vatican City before Pope Francis’ funeral, and later at the NATO summit in the Netherlands.
Trump described their most recent meeting as “warm,” and Zelensky expressed satisfaction, stating that it was “the best conversation with President Trump of all those that have taken place before.” However, tensions remain due to disagreements over the terms of peace and potential new sanctions on Russia.
The visit to the White House comes amid heightened tensions and concerns about Putin’s intentions. The summit in Alaska was marked by a showy display of welcome for Putin, but also a show of force with a B-2 bomber flyover and four F-22 Raptors parked alongside Air Force One.
This visit will be Zelensky’s first return to the Oval Office since his previous visit ended acrimoniously. Vice President JD Vance is expected to attend the meeting, where both leaders are expected to discuss a lasting peace for Ukraine. European leaders and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are also expected to join the discussions.
