Menendez Brothers Seek Conviction Overturn or Re-sentencing with New Evidence of Abuse Allegations and Self-Defense Claim
The legal team for Lyle and Erik Menendez, currently serving life sentences for the 1989 murders of their parents, are pursuing the overturning of their convictions or a resentencing, based on newly discovered evidence.
A significant part of this new evidence is a letter penned by Erik to his cousin Andy Cano in 1988 – prior to the killings – which hints at abuse by his father. Although they have never contested killing their parents, the brothers have consistently claimed they acted out of self-defense and endured decades of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of their father.
