Trump Appears to Side With Putin on Key Issues in Ukraine Conflict: A Turning Point in International Diplomacy?

At an unexpected summit in Alaska, President Donald Trump welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin with a display of military might, as a B-2 stealth bomber and fighter jets soared overhead following Putin’s arrival on a red carpet greeted by U.S. troops. The event, held amidst the picturesque Chugach mountains, marked a significant diplomatic moment for Putin, who is facing war crime allegations at the International Criminal Court.

The summit took an unexpected turn in a windowless press room on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage. There, a news reporter from a conservative outlet expressed confidence that Trump aims to end Biden’s ongoing conflict with Russia in Ukraine, which began in 2022 during Joe Biden’s presidency. The reporter seemed frustrated by the obstacles posed by Ukraine and Europe in reaching a deal.

This suggests a potential shift in U.S. stance on key issues in the conflict. For instance, Trump has seemingly abandoned the idea of a ceasefire as a prerequisite for peace talks, favoring a full peace deal instead – a long-held preference of Russia that views a halt to offensive operations as unnecessary given its current advantage.

As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meets with Trump in Washington, accompanied by European leaders, this change in stance will be a point of contention in the upcoming negotiations. Additionally, both Putin and possibly Trump may demand territorial concessions from Ukraine, particularly in the Donbas region, which could potentially be a deal-breaker for both Ukraine and Europe.

The discussion over significant territorial concessions underscores another victory for Russia: While Ukraine and its allies debate how much territory Kyiv should cede, the territory already captured by force is largely ignored. In the weeks ahead, as peace talks dominate the news agenda, it will be crucial to consider not just what Putin seeks, but what Trump desires.

The Alaska summit offered a unique glimpse into Trump’s deference towards Putin. During their joint press statements, Trump allowed Putin to speak first and listen quietly for several minutes as Putin discussed the shared history of Russia and America in Alaska. It seemed as though Putin was reintroducing Trump to the world stage, positioning him as a fellow powerful leader, distant from the issues of Ukraine and Europe.
