Trump White House Alters Press Corps Composition, Favoring Pro-Trump Personalities Over Traditional Journalists

In a notable development this Monday, the White House showcased the results of its efforts to restructure the press corps, as a MAGA online personality took center stage during a Q&A with President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Veteran White House correspondents expressed private reservations about this turn of events, deeming it inappropriate and far from traditional journalistic practices.

During the encounter, the president faced minimal tough questions or awkward exchanges with his counterpart. Instead, the dialogue served primarily as a platform for Trump to reinforce his own talking points.

“This display, particularly in front of foreign leaders, is disconcerting,” commented one White House correspondent to CNN on condition of anonymity. “Many of the questions aren’t designed to elicit answers, but rather to create confrontations or portray the president in a favorable light. That’s not journalism.”

“High schoolers could perform better than some of these individuals,” the correspondent added.

The focal point of contention is the composition of the press “pool,” a select group of journalists and camera crews granted access to events such as Oval Office photo ops, where space limitations preclude the larger press corps.

For decades, the White House Correspondents’ Association has managed the pool rotation, ensuring diverse representation from various networks and newspapers on different days. However, in February, the administration assumed control over the assignment function.

This transition provided the administration with a new form of influence — the ability to include explicitly pro-Trump media representatives within the group.

On this particular occasion, the pool included several conservative news outlets — Fox News, Breitbart, and the Washington Examiner — but omitted wire services that historically formed the backbone of the press corps.

Fox’s Peter Doocy posed five questions to the pair of presidents, while the primary voice other than Doocy belonged to Brian Glenn, a pro-Trump pundit who works for Real America’s Voice, a MAGA streaming platform featuring shows by Steve Bannon and Charlie Kirk.

Glenn was permitted entry into the Oval Office event by White House officials despite not being officially assigned to the pool on that day.

Glenn, known for his confrontation with Zelensky over the latter’s casual attire during a previous visit to the White House in February, referenced this incident during Monday’s exchange, complimenting Zelensky on his all-black suit.

“You look fabulous in that suit,” Glenn said, to which Trump responded, “Isn’t that nice? That’s the one who attacked you last time.”

Zelensky retorted humorously, saying, “You are still in the same suit. I changed, you did not.”

The makeup of the press pool attracted attention from some spectators, including Johanna Maska, a former White House press office staff member during the Obama administration.

In a post on platform X, Maska highlighted Glenn’s relationship with a Republican congresswoman and noted that his presence, along with Peter Doocy’s son, seemed to dominate an impromptu press conference involving crucial discussions about ‘peace in our time.’

During the Q&A, Glenn asked Zelensky about potential elections in Ukraine before facilitating Trump’s discussion on a favorite topic — the media.

“Do you think the American media really doesn’t want a peace deal?” Glenn inquired. “Because they’ve been so critical of you every step of the way as you lead the charge for peace.”

For nearly three and a half minutes, Trump elaborated on his grievances against the press, claiming he receives no recognition for ending ‘major wars.’ He shared an extended anecdote about a pro golfer’s son feeling secure to dine out in Washington, D.C., due to federalized policing.

“The level of hostility and animosity from the media is astounding,” Trump asserted. “Not with all — I mean, we have excellent people here as well, but there are terrible individuals who I believe are instructed on what to say.”

Shortly afterwards, Trump returned to Glenn — one of those ‘excellent people’ — for another question, this time about a matter unrelated to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“You’ve been vocal on social media about doing away with mail-in ballots and potentially electronic voting machines,” Glenn said. “Can you elaborate on that?”

“That’s quite an off-topic question,” Trump acknowledged before launching into another three and a half minute long discourse that touched upon the president’s 2020 election claims, transgender athletes, illegal immigration, and DC crime.
