Will Trump’s Unorthodox Approach End Ukraine-Russia Conflict? Contradictions and Lingering Suspicions Threaten Peace Process

In a significant development, Ukraine witnessed a promising day that could potentially mark a turning point in its prolonged conflict with Russia. On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House, where he found a more receptive audience than his previous encounter.

President Donald Trump presented an opportunity to show presidential leadership by mediating peace between Ukraine and Russia, thereby securing Europe and earning a genuine Nobel Peace Prize contention. A diverse group of European leaders, who came together in support of Zelensky, expressed their hopes that Trump would find the political and emotional motivation to stand with Ukraine.

The day’s events evoked echoes of historic political gatherings that ended World War II and shaped the modern world. This cooperation between a U.S. president and European leaders, working towards common goals, is emblematic of how global diplomacy should function.

However, concerns linger regarding the sustainability of this progress, given the fractured nature of the transatlantic alliance and Trump’s volatile disposition. The recent summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska raised apprehensions about potential concessions to Russia.

At the White House meetings, everyone present, including Trump, went to great lengths to emphasize possibilities and avoid specific discussions that could jeopardize the day’s success. By evening, Trump had announced plans for a potential three-way summit involving Zelensky and Putin, which could be preceded by a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested this meeting could take place within two weeks, indicating an accelerating diplomatic momentum.

Finish President Alexander Stubb commended Trump for the progress made in the past two weeks, stating that it surpasses what has been achieved in the previous three and a half years. This was a rare instance where such praise was not motivated by self-abasement to win Trump’s approval.

The meetings served as a compelling indication of Trump’s commitment to ending the conflict in Ukraine. However, they also exposed questions that could complicate Trump’s peace efforts and potentially dismantle Western unity – an outcome that would be advantageous for Putin.

One significant issue is securing guarantees for Ukraine after any peace deal. Trump expressed his readiness to provide military support from the U.S., but details regarding how this would work, and what Russia would accept as part of a deal, remain unclear.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed a model for security guarantees by Western nations, based on NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense pledge. While Trump expressed optimism about Putin’s openness to such guarantees after their Alaska summit, this proposal faces long odds given Russia’s hostile stance towards Ukraine’s NATO aspirations.

The strength and practicality of these guarantees are also questionable, as European nations may hesitate to risk their troops in a war against Russia to defend Ukraine. There is a concern about how Trump’s political base would react to such a new foreign commitment.

Another contentious issue is territory. The ongoing peace process revolves around the concept of “land swaps” to create a new border between an expanded Russia and a diminished Ukraine. However, this term masks the harsh reality that Ukraine could end up negotiating over its own territory.

According to sources briefed on Trump’s summit with Putin, Russia aims to capture territories through negotiations that its troops have failed to seize, including in the economically significant Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. This region is strategically crucial for Ukraine and would need to be defended against future attacks.

The potential for land swaps raises concerns about displacement, future disputes, and difficult decisions regarding sovereignty that may strain relations between Ukraine and its allies. There are formulations that could postpone these critical decisions and temporarily freeze the conflict, but their feasibility remains uncertain.

This complex situation underscores the need for careful diplomacy and sustained efforts to bridge seemingly impossible gaps. While optimism is necessary to drive progress, it must be tempered with a realistic understanding of the challenges ahead. Thousands of lives depend on finding a peaceful resolution to this conflict.
