Multiple Fatalities and Dozens Injured as Tour Bus Crashes near Niagara Falls, Most Passengers Foreign Nationals

A devastating accident occurred Friday afternoon as a tour bus carrying approximately 50 passengers en route from Niagara Falls to New York City crashed into a ditch, resulting in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries. According to a state official, four individuals were confirmed dead, with many more injured.

The incident took place on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, east of Buffalo, New York, approximately 40 miles east of Niagara Falls. Officials report that most passengers were not wearing seat belts, resulting in multiple ejections from the bus, which sustained significant damage during the crash.

At least 30 people have been transported to regional hospitals with a range of injuries, including head and internal trauma, broken bones, and critical conditions. Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo is treating 24 victims, while the University of Rochester Medical Center is caring for six, with two critically injured and four stable, including one pediatric patient.

The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time, but New York State Police spokesperson James O’Callaghan stated that authorities have a strong suspicion about what caused the bus to roll over after losing control without offering further details. The driver is currently cooperating with investigators and some victims were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.

Given the majority of passengers were of Indian, Chinese, or Filipino descent, translators have been dispatched to assist police in their investigation. The bus company has confirmed a list of 52 passengers on board, including the driver.

The westbound lanes of the Thruway have been reopened to traffic, but the eastbound lanes remain closed near the crash site due to ongoing rescue efforts and clean-up. The state’s department of transportation is working to help stranded individuals off the interstate.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the accident as “tragic” and expressed her gratitude to first responders for their tireless efforts in assisting those involved. The US embassies for the Philippines, China, and India have been contacted for comment regarding this developing story.
