A United Nations-sanctioned panel of experts on food security has issued a grim warning about the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The panel elevated the region’s food security classification to Phase 5 – the highest level on its scale, signifying starvation, destitution, and death. According to their report, approximately half a million people in Gaza are currently facing such dire conditions, while another 1.07 million residents – over half of the territory’s population – struggle with severe food deprivation.

The escalating situation comes amid nearly two years of conflict and Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza, and as Israel plans to initiate a fresh offensive in Gaza City. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) warning states that these conditions are characteristic of a famine-like situation.

Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee is set to receive hundreds of documents pertaining to the Justice Department’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. This development follows an earlier congressional subpoena requiring the DOJ to provide records detailing their probe into the high-profile case. Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., has indicated that certain files will be made public once victims’ names have been redacted.

In other news, the Department of Justice has appointed Jonathan Gross, an attorney who previously represented rioters involved in the January 6th, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, to work with the Trump administration’s “Weaponization Working Group.” This group reviews criminal and civil cases brought against President Donald Trump by federal and local prosecutors over the past four years.
