Waymo Secures Permit for Autonomous Vehicle Testing in New York City, Marking a Step Toward 21st Century Mobility
Autonomous vehicle giant Waymo has secured its first permit from the New York Department of Transportation, marking a significant step towards operating in New York City. The announcement was made by Mayor Eric Adams on Friday.
Commencing later this month, Waymo will test eight vehicles across Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. If successful, the testing period may be extended. As per New York state law, a driver must be present during the tests.
Mayor Adams emphasized the city’s tech-forward approach, stating, “We are continually seeking innovative methods to ensure our city progresses safely.” He added, “Welcome to New York City, Waymo, as this testing is but the first step in propelling our city into the 21st century.”
This development follows Waymo’s statement in April about submitting permits for testing in the city with a trained specialist behind the wheel.
In recent months, Waymo has expanded its services across the nation, launching operations in Austin this year and enhancing its presence in the San Francisco area in March. The company also plans to introduce autonomous vehicles to Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C., with operations set to commence in Philadelphia as it targets the Northeast market further.
Waymo’s CEO revealed that the company surpassed 10 million robotaxi trips in May. In 2021, Waymo made its first attempt at introducing its technology to New York City by deploying some vehicles for manual driving and data collection in specific city areas.
New York City has shown interest in integrating autonomous vehicles, with the Adams administration imposing a series of safety requirements for responsible testing last year and launching a permit program. As part of the permit, Waymo is required to furnish regular data reports to the DOT and collaborate closely with law enforcement and emergency services.
