Judge Blocks Trump Administration from Withholding Funds from Sanctuary Cities Nationwide

In a significant decision on Friday, US District Judge William Orrick in San Francisco extended an injunction that prevents the Trump administration from denying or conditioning federal funding to cities and counties, including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and over 30 other jurisdictions. This ruling comes as part of ongoing disputes regarding policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration efforts.

Originally, Judge Orrick’s order protected more than a dozen cities and counties such as San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle from potential funding cuts. In his latest decision, Orrick also blocked the administration from imposing immigration-related conditions on two specific grant programs.

The Trump administration has been pushing for increased pressure on sanctuary communities as part of its efforts to fulfill President Donald Trump’s promise to remove millions of individuals residing in the country illegally. Executive orders issued by Trump direct Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to withhold federal funds from sanctuary jurisdictions, and require every federal agency to ensure that payments to state and local governments do not support sanctuary policies that shield illegal aliens from deportation.

The cities and counties that have taken legal action argued that billions of dollars were at stake. In his ruling, Orrick deemed the executive orders and associated actions an unconstitutional “coercive threat.”

In May, the Department of Homeland Security published a list of over 500 sanctuary jurisdictions, stating each would receive formal notification that they had been deemed noncompliant. The list was later removed from the department’s website after critics pointed out it included localities that have actively supported the administration’s tough immigration policies.

The Justice Department has also filed lawsuits against New York, Los Angeles, and other cities over their sanctuary policies. There is no universally accepted definition for sanctuary cities, but they generally refer to places that limit cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE enforces immigration laws across the nation and relies on state and local authorities to identify immigrants wanted for deportation and hold them for federal officers.
