Trump Praises Ukraine’s Courage in Letter Supporting Independence Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia

In recognition of Ukraine’s Independence Day, President Donald Trump has penned a letter praising the country’s resilience and affirming the U.S.’s faith in its future as an autonomous nation. The correspondence was shared by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who echoed similar sentiments in his own address: “We will not yield.”

This anniversary comes amid a lull in peace talks and heightened aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who appears determined to escalate the ongoing conflict. Alongside Trump, world leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping, Britain’s King Charles, and Pope Leo XIV extended messages of support on this significant day.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made an official visit to Ukraine, assuring that his country’s backing for Kyiv remains steadfast: “Our commitment to you is unwavering, and we stand with you every step of the way as you defend your sovereignty.”

Trump’s letter emphasized the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people, expressing respect for their tenacity and belief in their future as an independent state. He urged a negotiated settlement to bring about a lasting peace that would halt the bloodshed and protect Ukraine’s sovereignty:

“Now is the time to put an end to senseless violence. The United States supports a diplomatic resolution that leads to a sustainable, enduring peace that halts the carnage and safeguards Ukraine’s autonomy and dignity.”

Zelensky expressed gratitude for Trump’s message and addressed his fellow Ukrainians, forecasting that the country would still be celebrating Independence Day a century from now. He highlighted Ukraine’s strength and self-worth, asserting that it no longer relies on external goodwill but is driven by its own will to ensure its survival:

“Ukraine is robust and possesses self-respect. We are no longer compelled to endure the humiliation that Russia terms a ‘compromise.’ We seek just peace. Our destiny lies in our hands alone, and the world acknowledges this.”

Referencing recent negotiations with Trump and European leaders to advance a peace plan for Ukraine, Zelensky emphasized his nation’s determination: “Ukraine has not yet emerged victorious, but it will certainly not succumb. Ukraine has secured its independence. Ukraine is not a victim; it is a fighter. Ukraine does not plead; it offers. Alliance and partnership.”

On the eve of Independence Day, Russia launched 72 drones and a ballistic missile toward Ukraine, with the majority being intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses. In retaliation, Russian forces claimed to have destroyed 95 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across various territories overnight, including one near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant that caused damage upon impact, affecting a transformer. Local radiation levels and the subsequent fire at the industrial site remained stable, according to officials.
