Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Slams Trump’s Proposed Deployment of Federal Forces to Chicago: A Dangerous Power Grab
Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois took aim at President Donald Trump on Monday for suggesting that federal forces might be deployed to Chicago. Addressing a press conference in the city alongside Mayor Brandon Johnson and other local leaders, Pritzker accused the administration of attempting to “bypass our democracy, militarize our cities, and manipulate elections.”
At the event, Pritzker expressed concern over the lack of communication from the White House regarding any potential deployment, stating that there had been no contact with his office or the mayor’s office. He questioned the motives behind such a move, asking what justification the administration could have for planning such action without consultation.
Reports from The Washington Post indicate that the administration’s plans for Chicago may mirror Trump’s summer deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles to quell protests against immigration policies. However, it is worth noting that the authority over law enforcement in Washington, D.C. differs significantly from that in other cities.
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order, which tasks Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth with establishing specialized units within the National Guard for handling public order issues. This move represents the clearest indication yet that the President intends to expand the military’s domestic role.
In response to criticism leveled at him during the signing ceremony, Trump reportedly said, “I have some slob like Pritzker criticizing us before we even go there.” Addressing this remark, Pritzker stated unequivocally, “Mr. President, do not come to Chicago. You are neither wanted nor needed here.”
