Israel Under Fire for Deadly Strikes on Gaza Hospital Killing Five Journalists and Medical Workers

In an escalating controversy, Israel is facing severe international criticism following two air strikes on a Gaza hospital that resulted in the deaths of five journalists and several medical personnel on Monday. The attacks, which occurred just minutes apart, reportedly targeted the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed at least 20 fatalities with many more injured as a result of these attacks. Among the journalists killed were Mohammad Salama from Al Jazeera, Hussam Al-Masri, a Reuters contractor, Mariam Abu Dagga who had worked with Associated Press (AP) and various other outlets throughout the conflict, and freelance journalists Moath Abu Taha and Ahmed Abu Aziz. Gaza’s Civil Defense organization also reported one of its crew members was killed in the strike.

The Israeli military has acknowledged conducting a strike in the area of the hospital but insists it did not intentionally target civilians. They claim they were operating under an “extremely complex reality” and are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. However, critics argue that Israel’s actions suggest otherwise, with the deliberate targeting of journalists and first responders being viewed as potential war crimes.

Journalist organizations and international bodies have expressed outrage over these deaths, with many describing it as one of the deadliest attacks on journalists since the Gaza conflict began. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the killings and called for civilians, including medical workers and journalists, to be protected at all times.

The latest casualty is Hassan Douhan, a journalist who was killed by Israeli forces in Khan Younis. Prior to Monday’s attack, Israel had reportedly killed 192 journalists since the start of the war in Gaza according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The CPJ president has accused Israel of deliberately targeting a Reuters camera position and committing unlawful killings, potentially constituting war crimes.

The international community continues to pressure Israel for accountability regarding these incidents.
