President Trump Urges Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup Participation as Captain in Anticipated New York Showdown
American President Donald Trump has confirmed his attendance at the highly-anticipated Ryder Cup opening round in New York next month, expressing his belief that US captain Keegan Bradley should also participate.
In a post on his social media platform Saturday night, Trump announced his plans to attend the three-day tournament between the United States and Europe on Friday, Sept. 26th, at Bethpage State Park’s Black course on Long Island.
While it was the PGA Tour that extended the invitation, confusion arose as Trump appeared to conflate the tour with the PGA of America, which organizes the Ryder Cup in America. A spokesperson for the PGA of America confirmed that both the organization and captain Bradley had invited Trump.
The upcoming Ryder Cup is shrouded in excitement due to its location – a public course renowned for its boisterous fans. Given President Trump’s affinity for golf, his presence during the event was expected. Earlier this year, he met with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods in an attempt to bridge the divide caused by the LIV Golf breakaway, funded by Saudi Arabia. The PGA Tour recently announced its return to Trump National Doral in Florida next year for the first time in nearly a decade.
Adding to the intrigue of this Ryder Cup is the question of whether Bradley, at 39 years old, will become the first captain to play since Arnold Palmer in 1963. The debate surrounding Bradley’s role as both player and captain has been extensive, with his recent victories adding fuel to the discussion. On Saturday alone, he shot a 63, securing a fourth-place position and a chance to win the season-ending FedEx Cup.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his support for Bradley’s inclusion in the American Ryder Cup team, stating, “Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team — As Captain!!! He is an AMAZING guy. It will be a great Ryder Cup.”
President Trump has friendly relationships with several prominent golfers, including Bryson DeChambeau, who qualified for the US team and was the only golfer Trump appointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Bradley’s decision regarding his participation will be announced on Wednesday when he reveals his six captain’s picks.
