Unprecedented Move: Trump Fires Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook Amidst Allegations of Mortgage Fraud

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he had dismissed Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, marking the first time in the central bank’s 111-year history that a president has taken such action.

The move signifies an escalation of Trump’s ongoing battle with the Fed, which he has criticized for not lowering interest rates fast enough.

Recently, Cook has faced criticism from Trump and members of his administration over allegations of mortgage fraud. The Justice Department has stated that it will investigate these claims, initially raised by Federal Housing Finance Director Bill Pulte.

The Fed did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNN.

It remains unclear whether Trump has the legal authority to fire Cook based on these allegations. According to law, a president may only remove members of the Fed’s board “for cause,” though the specific definition of what constitutes a for-cause firing is not explicitly stated.

Last week, Cook issued a statement indicating that she would not be coerced into resigning due to questions raised on Twitter. She stated, “I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet. I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.”
