Brooklyn Democrat Zohran Mamdani and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Engage in 90-Minute Meeting over NYC’s Affordability Crisis

In a recent development, Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani held a 90-minute meeting with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday. The gathering took place at a church in the Bedford-Stuyvesant district of Brooklyn, which falls under Jeffries’ representational jurisdiction.

The meeting was also attended by Yvette Clarke, Chair of the Black Congressional Caucus, and approximately 20 local pastors from churches across Brooklyn. The discussion covered various topics, including the urgent affordability crisis and the exodus of Black New Yorkers from the city.

According to Mamdani’s campaign spokesperson, Dora Pekec, the meeting focused on ensuring every New Yorker can afford to live in the city and maintain a life of dignity. The meeting was a follow-up to their initial encounter in July.

While Jeffries had no prior relationship with Mamdani, recent conversations between them have been described as candid and constructive. In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Jeffries acknowledged these discussions, stating they are focusing on the future of New York City and addressing pressing issues such as the housing crisis.

Mamdani clinched the Democratic nomination in June, securing a substantial vote share even in Jeffries’ district. However, during his campaign, he faced challenges in gaining support from older Black voters and middle-class moderates in Brooklyn. This meeting could potentially be significant for Mamdani as he moves towards the general election in November.
