Massive Russian Attack on Kyiv Leaves 14 Dead Including Three Children; EU Condemns Deliberate Strike on Capital
The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv suffered a devastating assault overnight, with Russian forces launching drones and missiles that resulted in at least 14 fatalities, including three young children. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed this information on Thursday, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the innocent lives.
Three of the victims were children – a 2-year-old, a 17-year-old, and a 14-year-old. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing violence in the region.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, the Russian military unleashed 629 air attack weapons throughout the night, consisting of 598 drones and 31 missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the attack as a “deliberate murder of civilians,” echoing his earlier sentiments that these attacks are in response to international calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution.
Ukrainian authorities have mobilized approximately 500 rescuers and 1,000 police officers to respond to multiple incidents across the city, including at a building housing the European Union’s mission to Ukraine. The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, condemned the attack, stating that the EU will not be intimidated.
The incident left many residents scrambling for safety. Vitaliy Protsiuk, a Kyiv resident, reported that his wife has been missing since the attack. The couple were preparing to seek shelter when an explosion occurred, burying Protsiuk under debris. As of now, his wife remains unaccounted for.
The attack on Kyiv marks a significant escalation in violence, coming just over two weeks after US President Donald Trump held talks with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, aiming to broker peace. However, progress towards negotiations has stalled, and there is no indication that a bilateral meeting between Zelensky and Putin will take place as planned by the White House.
On Wednesday, Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky’s office, and Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, met with Saudi Arabia’s defense minister to discuss an end to the war. A Ukrainian delegation is also scheduled to meet US officials in New York on Friday.
Meanwhile, Putin is set to attend a massive military parade in China next week, where he will be joined by other world leaders, including North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia-friendly European leaders such as Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia and Slovakia’s Robert Fico.
The assault on Kyiv is part of a series of attacks across Ukraine this week, with Russian forces capturing two villages in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region. This intensification of aggression suggests that Moscow continues to exert pressure on Kyiv to cede territory in any potential peace negotiations.
In his analysis of the attack, Tkachenko noted that the Kremlin typically employs “combined attacks from different directions” and targets residential buildings indiscriminately. Decoy missiles were also used to confuse Ukrainian defense systems. Numerous high-rise residential buildings, a kindergarten, private homes, offices, transport infrastructure, and dozens of cars were damaged in the attack, with hundreds of facilities expected to be affected and thousands of windows shattered. A shopping center in the city center was also damaged.
