Minneapolis Church Shooting: 13-Year-Old Endre Gunter Survives with Courage, Inspiring Medical Team and Community

In an extraordinary display of courage and resilience, 13-year-old Endre Gunter asked a surgeon to pause for a moment during emergency surgery following a gunshot wound to his stomach. As recounted by his aunt, Natalie Davis, on a GoFundMe page established to help with medical expenses, the young boy requested a prayer before the procedure.

The surgeon later shared that Endre’s brave spirit inspired the entire medical team throughout the operation, an experience that will be forever etched in the family’s memory.

On Wednesday, 18 individuals – primarily children – were wounded during a shooting at a Minneapolis church, where Annunciation Catholic School faculty and students were observing the commencement of the new academic year. Tragically, two young lives were lost: Fletcher Merkel, aged 8, and a 10-year-old. Community members gathered for vigils across Minneapolis to remember these innocent victims, their candles casting flickering light against the somber backdrop.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara expressed his dismay during a press conference, stating that the children had been targeted by a cowardly shooter who could not see them through narrow church windows. The gunman was positioned on an elevated level aligned with the pews, firing indiscriminately into the house of worship.

Several victims remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition. Among the injured is Endre, who was hit twice while praying alongside his classmates during Mass at Annunciation Church. Despite his harrowing experience, his aunt praised Endre’s display of strength and faith beyond his years. Upon arrival on the scene, a police officer provided assistance, comforting him before he was transported to the hospital.

Endre’s mother, Danielle Gunter, shared in an online statement that the family is grappling with emotions ranging from pain and anger to confusion and the harsh reality that their lives will never be the same. Yet they find solace in knowing their child is still alive, and are committed to helping him recover emotionally and physically. Endre is currently recuperating, surrounded by loving relatives who are dedicated to his healing journey.

The Forchas family has also been impacted by this tragic event on multiple fronts. Twelve-year-old Sophia Forchas and her younger brother attended Annunciation Catholic School when the shooting occurred, as detailed in a GoFundMe page established for their family’s support. Remarkably, Sophia’s mother – a pediatric critical care nurse – arrived at Hennepin County Medical Center for work unaware that her children’s school was involved in the incident.

Sophia underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition following the shooting, according to GoFundMe organizers. Her younger brother was unharmed but witnessed the terrifying event, an experience no child should ever endure as described by the fundraiser. Father Timothy Sas, a priest at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, spent time with Sophia’s family at Hennepin County Medical Center, having been parishioners of his church for generations. Other children from his parish also attend Annunciation Catholic School.
