Oprah Encourages Jayne Kennedy to Share Her Life Story in Upcoming Memoir, Plain Jayne – Exploring a Career Trailblazer’s Triumphs and Tragedies, Including a Decade-Defining Scandal
Veteran journalist and former beauty queen Jayne Kennedy delves into her personal life in her latest memoir “Plain Jayne,” which she credits Oprah Winfrey for inspiring her to write.
In an interview with CNN, Kennedy revealed that Winfrey encouraged her to share her life story in 2010. The groundbreaking figure, who was crowned Miss Ohio in 1970 and became the first Black woman correspondent on CBS’s “The NFL Today” in 1978, found writing her memoir a profound experience that allowed her to explore her authentic self beyond her career and family.
Kennedy’s memoir does not shy away from controversy, addressing an infamous scandal from the early 1980s following her divorce from actor Leon Isaac Kennedy. A private tape of their intimate moments was leaked, causing Kennedy to lose friends and business opportunities before such scandals became commonplace with figures like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.
Despite the difficult nature of revisiting this painful period, Kennedy confronts it early in her book. “It was extremely challenging, and I initially wanted to leave it for last,” she said. “However, I knew that if I didn’t share that part of my truth, people might question the rest.”
“Plain Jayne” offers a candid look at Kennedy’s life, including her successful career in journalism, her personal relationships, and her struggles with self-identity. The memoir sheds light on the early 1980s scandal that threatened to overshadow her accomplishments.
Now 73 years old and a grandmother, Kennedy has always prioritized honesty. Growing up in Washington D.C., she was determined to become a star, a goal she achieved despite facing decades of challenges in the entertainment industry.
Throughout her life, Kennedy has instilled the importance of never giving up in her four daughters and now grandchildren. Being a mother has been the most significant part of her life, and she maintains close relationships with her grown daughters.
“Plain Jayne” is set to hit bookstores on Tuesday. Kennedy hopes her story of strength, empowerment, and resilience will help those who are currently struggling. “It’s not just about healing the past,” she said. “There are women suffering today, and if I can help in any way, I want to.”
