Massive Russian Drone and Missile Attack Hits Kyiv, Kills Two; Escalation in Ukraine War

In Kyiv, Ukraine, Russia launched an extensive air attack on Sunday, utilizing drones and missiles in what marks the largest aerial assault on the nation since the conflict commenced. At least two lives were claimed, with smoke billowing from the rooftop of a significant government building.

According to official reports, Russian forces deployed 805 drones and decoys in this attack. Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force, confirmed to media outlets that this Sunday assault surpasses any previous Russian drone strike since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. Additionally, 13 missiles of varying types were launched by Russia.

Ukrainian forces reported successfully intercepting and neutralizing 747 drones and 4 missiles, as per an Air Force statement. The attack resulted in nine missile impacts and 56 drone strikes across 37 locations within Ukraine. Debris from neutralized drones and missiles fell on eight separate locations.

Reporters from multiple news agencies witnessed a column of smoke rising from the rooftop of Kyiv’s cabinet of ministers building, although it remains unclear whether this was due to a direct hit or debris falling from the sky, signifying an intensification in Russia’s air campaign thus far avoiding government buildings in the city center.

The struck building is home to Ukraine’s Cabinet, housing the offices of its ministers. Access to the building was barricaded as fire trucks and ambulances arrived on the scene.

Ukrainian officials confirmed two fatalities and 15 injuries due to the attack. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated, “For the first time, the government building has been damaged by an enemy attack, including the roof and upper floors. We will restore these buildings, but lost lives cannot be recovered.”

Svyrydenko further emphasized, “The world must respond to this destruction not only with words, but with actions. There is a need to strengthen sanctions pressure – primarily against Russian oil and gas.”

Among the deceased was a one-year-old child, whose body was recovered from the wreckage by rescue personnel, as reported by Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city administration. Debris from Russian drones struck residential buildings in both the Sviatoshynskyi and Darnytskyi districts of Kyiv.

This Sunday’s attack represents the second mass Russian drone and missile assault on Kyiv within a fortnight, as peace talks negotiations dwindle. The attack follows European leaders urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to take steps towards ending the war, after 26 of Ukraine’s allies pledged to deploy troops as a “reassurance force” for post-conflict Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his readiness to meet with Putin for peace negotiations, and has appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to impose punitive sanctions on Russia in order to compel it to end the war.
