Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook Fights Back Against Mortgage Fraud Allegations from Trump Administration

The Federal Reserve is facing a legal challenge over the characterization of a condominium purchased by Governor Lisa Cook as a “vacation home,” a classification that could potentially undermine accusations of mortgage fraud made against her by the previous administration.

President Donald Trump, in an attempt to reshape the central bank and instigate a significant reduction in interest rates, sought to dismiss Cook on grounds of alleged misrepresentation of property status. According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, Cook has been accused of claiming both her Atlanta condo and another property as her primary residence simultaneously.

In court documents, Cook’s condo was also described as a “second home.” This second form submission was part of the process for obtaining a security clearance.

Cook is currently embroiled in a lawsuit against the administration to prevent her dismissal, marking the first time a president has sought to remove a member from the seven-person board of governors. On Tuesday, Cook secured an injunction that permits her to continue serving as a Fed governor.

The administration has appealed the ruling and requested an expedited hearing by Monday, just before the Fed’s scheduled meeting to decide on potential interest rate reductions. Most economists predict a quarter-point cut in rates.

Bill Pulte, a Trump appointee to the agency that oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has accused Cook of submitting separate documents claiming both properties as “primary residences.” Pulte submitted a criminal referral to the Justice Department, prompting an investigation.

Labeling a home as a “primary residence” can lead to favorable down payment and mortgage terms compared to designating one as a vacation home.

The initial report of Cook’s property descriptions was published by Reuters. Fulton County tax records indicate that since purchasing the condo in 2021, Cook has never claimed a homestead exemption, which reduces property taxes for those using the property as their primary residence.

The White House has yet to respond to a request for comment.
