ABC Suspends Jimmy Kimmel Indefinitely Over Controversial Remarks Amidst FCC Pressure and Political Tensions

Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show has been indefinitely suspended by ABC following controversial remarks made about the suspected killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The network confirmed the news on Wednesday evening, stating that “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will be preempted indefinitely.

This marks the second high-profile late-night host to step away from television, as CBS decided not to renew “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” a few months ago. CBS attributed their decision to financial reasons but it came at a time when the company was dealing with legal issues and corporate sale, leading some to speculate on the timing of the announcement.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr recently criticized Kimmel’s monologue during an interview, threatening to revoke licenses from ABC affiliates airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” if the content continued to distort news. Carr argued that licensed broadcasters should push back against Comcast and Disney, the parent company of ABC, to prevent potential FCC fines or license revocations for broadcasting such content.

Nexstar Media Group, which operates 32 ABC stations, has announced it will stop airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely starting Wednesday night. Nexstar is also currently seeking approval from the FCC for its $6.2 billion merger with TEGNA Inc.

Nexstar’s broadcasting president, Andrew Alford, stated that Kimmel’s comments do not align with the values of the communities they serve and aim to promote “respectful, constructive dialogue” during this sensitive political period.

On Monday night, Kimmel addressed the assassination of Charlie Kirk in his monologue, stating: “The MAGA movement hit a new low over the weekend as they attempted to characterize the individual who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything but one of them, all while trying to score political points.” The police are still investigating the motive behind Kirk’s murder and gathering information on the suspect.

President Trump has been vocal in his criticism of both Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, labeling them as untalented among other things. Both hosts have utilized biting wit to comment on social and current events.

Trump took to social media from Windsor Castle to express his support for the move by ABC, stating it was “Great News for America.” However, Trump’s post contained a false claim that Kimmel’s show had been cancelled entirely.
