Thousands of Cats Roam Peacefully at American University of Beirut’s Stunning Campus – A Oasis of Calm Amidst Stressful Times

Nestled amidst towering trees and verdant landscapes that cascade towards the Mediterranean Sea, the American University of Beirut (AUB) is home to over 1,200 felines, offering a unique blend of tranquility and feline companionship.

This educational institution has served as a sanctuary for stray cats since the tumultuous years of Lebanon’s conflict. During its recent skirmish with Israel, it welcomed an additional influx of these furry residents who were abandoned at the university’s gates.

Despite their substantial population, the cats are largely elusive due to their shy nature, ensuring that cohabitation remains manageable rather than overwhelming. Among them reside both pedigreed and street-savvy cats. The university actively works towards their wellbeing by providing spaying, neutering, and vaccination services, with an aim to rehome those adoptable.

Not every individual shares the same affection for felines; however, students are expected to treat these campus residents kindly. As a result, these cats roam freely through open doors, occasionally finding themselves lounging in classrooms.
