Ukraine’s Zelenskyy Warns of Imminent AI-Driven War as Trump Shifts Position on Ukraine Conflict

In a sobering address to the United Nations General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored the looming threat of an AI-driven conflict, warning global leaders of the imminent danger posed by autonomous drones targeting critical infrastructure and civilians.

“The inevitability is not far off when drone-versus-drone battles become a reality, with these unmanned aerial vehicles striking essential facilities and endangering populations without any human intervention, save for those managing AI systems,” Zelenskyy cautioned.

He emphasized that the current arms race represents humanity’s most devastating to date, as it encompasses artificial intelligence.

Zelenskyy’s address coincided with heightened apprehension in Europe following recent Russian drone incursions into several NATO member states’ eastern borders. This escalation has sparked concerns of a potential regional conflict spillover from Russia’s ongoing, three-and-a-half-year invasion of Ukraine.

“Ukraine serves as the initial battleground, and now Russian drones are infiltrating European airspace, with Moscow’s operations expanding across multiple countries. Putin aims to perpetuate this war by extending its reach,” Zelenskyy asserted.

The president’s address follows a shift in President Trump’s stance regarding the Ukraine-Russia conflict, as revealed on his Truth Social platform the previous day. Trump declared that, with European Union support, Ukraine has the potential to regain all lost territories and reclaim its original form.

This statement represents a departure from the earlier position of the Trump administration, which advocated for Kyiv to cede territory to Moscow—such as Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014—to resolve the conflict.

Trump met with Zelenskyy on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday. In response to a reporter’s query during the meeting, Trump confirmed his support for NATO members taking action against Russian aircraft that violate their airspace: “Yes, I do.”
