Deadly Stampede at Indian Actor-Politician Rally Leaves At Least 36 Dead and 40 Injured
A tragic incident unfolded at a public rally in Tamil Nadu’s southern region, resulting in the death of at least 36 individuals and injuries to 40 others. According to health minister Ma Subramanian, who spoke to the Associated Press, all casualties had occurred before medical attention could be administered, with eight of the victims being children.
The event was attended by an estimated multitude and was being addressed by Vijay, a prominent actor-turned-politician in the district of Karur. Reports from Indian media outlets suggest that the chaos ensued as Vijay’s supporters and admirers surged forward to approach his vehicle, leading to a stampede. The gathering took place under intense heat conditions, and Vijay arrived hours later than scheduled, according to officials.
“Disorder” was noted at the event, with Subramanian ordering an immediate investigation into the incident. As per reports from the Press Trust of India news agency, at least 30 individuals lost consciousness during Vijay’s speech, necessitating their transportation to nearby hospitals via ambulances. His speech was paused midway after workers raised an alarm about fainting and falling attendees; however, Vijay resumed his address following the removal of affected individuals.
Later in the day, Vijay expressed his condolences through a social media post: “My heart is shattered… I am enduring unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow beyond words.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sympathy for the affected families, stating on social media, “The unfortunate incident is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them during this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery for all those injured.”
In southern Indian states, particularly Tamil Nadu, some film stars hold a larger-than-life status, rooted in ancient Tamil culture’s veneration of heroes and idols. Many have transitioned into politics, with some even receiving divine-like status. In 2024, Vijay retired from acting and founded his own political party, although it remains uncertain if he plans to contest elections in Tamil Nadu state.
Stampedes are relatively common occurrences in India during events that attract large crowds. Just this year, at least 30 people perished in a stampede during the Maha Kumbh festival in January, marking one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
