Katie Ledecky Secures Seventh World Title in Women’s 800-Meter Freestyle, Outpaces Rising Star Summer McIntosh at World Aquatics Championships

Katie Ledecky secured her seventh world title in the women’s 800-meter freestyle event on Saturday, besting Summer McIntosh and Lani Pallister in a thrilling contest. This World Aquatics Championships saw Ledecky, the sport’s established icon, lock horns with McIntosh, the promising 18-year-old contender aiming to match Michael Phelps’ record of five gold medals at a single world championship.

In their earlier encounter in the 400m freestyle this week, it was McIntosh who triumphed. However, Ledecky reasserted her supremacy over longer distances on this occasion. The three swimmers created an extraordinary final, with the gap between them never exceeding a few strokes throughout the race.

Ledecky touched the wall first with a championship-record time of 8:05.62, while Pallister finished second, only 0.36 seconds adrift, and McIntosh claimed third, trailing by 1.31 seconds. Following the race, Ledecky expressed her admiration for the performance, stating, “We had three under 8:10 today. That’s pretty incredible. Lani with the 8:05, Summer with the 8:07. They pushed me all the way. I’m just really happy I could put that together. I just kept telling myself to trust my legs, because I’ve gotten a little better at kicking. So, I brought it home in the end.”

The trio began the race swiftly, with all swimmers being inside world-record pace at the halfway point. Although McIntosh briefly led with approximately 100m remaining, Ledecky led for nearly the entire race and managed to fend off any late charges from her opponents.

“I came in tonight trying to enjoy this as much as I can,” Ledecky said post-race. “I don’t feel like I have anything to lose at this point in my career. I just enjoy it every time I get to walk out in front of a crowd like this and swim against the best in the world.”

This victory marks Ledecky’s second gold medal at this championship and her 23rd world title, following her win in the 1,500m earlier in the week. Meanwhile, McIntosh has already secured three gold medals at this championship – in the 200m butterfly, 400m freestyle, and 200m medley – and will have an opportunity to earn a fourth in the 400m individual medley on Sunday.
