Trump Clashes with Schumer Over Nominee Confirmations, Urges Senate Democrats to ‘Go to Hell’
The standoff between Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and President Donald Trump over confirming the president’s nominees escalated on Saturday, with Trump taking to social media to urge Schumer to “go to hell.”
Negotiations between Schumer, Senate Republican leader John Thune, and White House officials had been ongoing in an attempt to resolve the impasse and allow senators to depart for their August recess. However, Trump’s post on Saturday suggested that talks have effectively stalled, as he described Schumer’s demands as “egregious and unprecedented.”
Democrats have been delaying confirmation of Trump’s lower-level nominees, necessitating the Senate to continue sessions over the weekend in order to confirm them. As a minority party, Democrats possess the power to force Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to navigate time-consuming obstacles before voting can take place.
Schumer has reportedly made several demands to agree to expedite the confirmation of a group of nominees. These demands include the reinstatement of federal funds for various programs, including the National Institutes of Health and foreign aid.
Additionally, Schumer is seeking Trump’s agreement that he will not attempt to pass another funding cut package known as “rescissions.” This request follows the approval earlier in the summer of a $9 billion package aimed at codifying some cuts.
Earlier in the week, Trump had called on the Senate to remain in session and forego the August recess until all his nominees were confirmed. In his Saturday post, he urged Schumer to reject any offer, return home, and explain to constituents the actions of the Democratic Party, while praising the Republican Party’s efforts for the country. Trump wrote, “Have a great RECESS.”
