Mild 3.0 Earthquake Rattles New York Metropolitan Area, Social Media Ablaze
A 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook the New York metropolitan region late on Saturday evening. According to the United States Geological Survey, the seismic event occurred in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, approximately 7.8 miles west of Central Park, at a depth of around 6.2 miles below the surface.
Residents from New York City’s Brooklyn borough described the tremor as brief, with one person reporting a momentary swaying sensation. Social media platforms swiftly buzzed with activity from individuals who felt the quake. The Empire State Building took to X, a social platform, to reassure its followers, stating “I AM FINE.”
Compared to a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Tewksbury, New Jersey, in 2024, this latest tremor was significantly milder and located slightly closer to the city. A 3.0 magnitude earthquake typically does not result in any structural damage; however, such mild quakes are relatively uncommon in the Northeastern United States.
At the time of reporting, New York City Emergency Management had not received any reports of significant impacts as a result of this seismic event.
