The Canadian teenager crossed the finish line in 4:25.78, shattering the previous championship record and securing her fourth gold medal of the event.
With five medals earned across various events, McIntosh impressed by equaling the achievement of American superstar Katie Ledecky and Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström, who are the only other women to win as many golds at a single World Championships. Although just missing Michael Phelps’ record of five gold medals in one event, McIntosh’s performance was still remarkable.
“Overall, I’m pleased with this World Championships,” McIntosh told reporters after the race. “Four golds is something that I’ve never achieved at the world stage before.” She went on to express her hope of continuing her success and aiming for five gold medals in future competitions.
On Sunday, McIntosh dominated the 400-meter individual medley, finishing over seven seconds ahead of silver medalists Jenna Forrester from Australia and Mio Narita from Japan, who tied for second place with a time of 4:33.26. China’s young prodigy Yu Zidi narrowly missed out on a podium finish, placing fourth by a mere half-second.
McIntosh’s impressive display in Singapore saw her amass 13 medals overall, including eight gold. Along with her victory in the 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly, and 200m medley events, she demonstrated versatility and dominance across various disciplines.
In the men’s 400m medley, France’s Léon Marchand secured his second gold medal of the championships by completing a medley double. His winning time of 4:04.73 was enough to finish ahead of Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita and Russian Ilia Borodin who took second and third place respectively, claiming his seventh career gold at the World Championships.
