Trump Threatens Tariff Increase on India for Purchasing Russian Oil Amid Global Market Tensions
In a tweet posted on Monday, President Donald Trump announced plans to significantly increase tariffs on imports from India due to the country’s continued purchases of Russian oil. The president asserted that India is purchasing vast quantities of Russian crude oil and then reselling it on the global market at a profit.
“India is buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, only to sell a significant portion of it on the Open Market for substantial profits,” Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social. “Consequently, I will be substantially raising the Tariff imposed on India by the United States.”
However, Indian officials have responded with disagreement, claiming they are being unfairly targeted by both the U.S. and European Union for importing oil from Russia.
Tariffs represent taxes levied directly upon importers, although it’s worth noting that exporting countries may also experience indirect harm as higher prices typically lead to reduced demand, prompting nations to seek out lower-tariff imports or boost domestic production.
Last week, Trump had threatened a minimum tariff of 25% on Indian goods, set to be implemented by the end of this week. Currently, these goods are subject to a 10% minimum rate. The president did not disclose what new tariff rate would apply to Indian imports should they persist in purchasing Russian oil.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs explained that the country has resorted to importing oil from Russia due to traditional supply routes being redirected towards Europe following the onset of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The ministry stated, via a social media post from its spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, that India’s imports are essential to maintain stable and affordable energy costs for domestic consumers.
India also accused both the U.S. and EU of engaging in trade with Russia under these circumstances. “Given this context, the targeting of India is unwarranted and unjustifiable,” the ministry stated. “Like any major economy, India will implement all necessary measures to protect its national interests and economic security.”
Trump’s tariff threat comes as he escalates pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a ceasefire with Ukraine within days, shortening his previous deadline.
