New Zealand Air Force Rescues Three from Dark, Freezing Antarctica in High-Risk Operation

The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) successfully executed a high-risk evacuation mission from a United States research station in Antarctica on Tuesday, transporting three individuals to New Zealand for urgent medical care.

Under extreme weather conditions and absolute darkness, the RNZAF aircraft embarked on a 20-hour journey, landing in Christchurch early Wednesday morning. The mission’s specific details, including the nature of the medical emergencies and the nationalities involved, remain undisclosed.

Air Commodore Andy Scott highlighted the extraordinary challenges associated with mid-winter flights to Antarctica, citing the freezing temperatures, volatile weather conditions, and pitch-black darkness as key factors that make such missions among the most demanding for air crews. He emphasized that the extreme cold and landing on an icy runway in the dark posed significant difficulties, particularly when using night vision goggles.

Temperatures at the McMurdo Station dipped to a chilling -24°C (-11°F) on Tuesday, further complicating the already complex mission.

Praising the RNZAF’s exceptional skills and readiness, Melissa Sweeney, the US Chargé d’Affaires for New Zealand, described the evacuation as flawlessly executed. Sweeney expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Kiwi team for their swift action in one of Earth’s most inhospitable environments.

The RNZAF has previously demonstrated its expertise in similar rescue operations, having carried out similar missions in 2021 and 2024.
