Trump Administration Ends Elon Musk’s Weekly Accomplishment Email Demand for Federal Employees

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced on Tuesday that federal employees will no longer be required to detail their weekly accomplishments in an email as a condition of employment, following communication with agency human resources leads. OPM stated that managers are accountable for staying informed about the work of their team members and have numerous existing tools at their disposal to do so.

In February, federal employees began receiving emails requesting them to outline their weekly tasks. Elon Musk, tech billionaire and special government employee under President Trump, had initially requested that all federal employees respond to such requests or face termination. The emails, with the subject line “What did you do last week?”, caused widespread confusion due to conflicting guidance, leaving many unsure of how to proceed.

In response to this, OPM later notified agencies that responding to the email was voluntary and that failure to respond would not be considered a resignation. The decision to discontinue the email ultimatum follows Musk’s announcement in June that his tenure in the Trump administration had concluded, due to disagreements with President Trump over tax and domestic policy matters.

Reuters first reported the plan to formally stop sending these emails.
