McDonald’s Sales Surge with Successful Minecraft Movie Tie-In and New Menu Items, Boosting Revenue by 5%

McDonald’s sales have experienced a significant growth, attributable to a successful marketing campaign, notably the “Minecraft Movie” promotional deal which marked the chain’s largest ever marketing initiative.

In the quarter ending June 30, sales at McDonald’s US outlets increased by 2.5%. This marks an end to two consecutive quarters of decreasing sales, signaling a positive turnaround for the corporation. The company attributed this rebound to its effective marketing strategies, such as the extensive movie promotion and the introduction of crispy chicken strips.

In late March, McDonald’s launched a Happy Meal for children featuring themed toys and an adult meal tied to the release of the Minecraft Movie, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a sister company of CNN. The film grossed close to $1 billion globally.

The promotion was executed in 100 markets, contributing to a 3.8% increase in global sales at outlets open for over a year. Total revenue also saw a rise of 5% to reach $6.8 billion as per the company’s announcement on Wednesday.

In the previous quarter, CEO Chris Kempczinski had highlighted that low- and middle- income consumers were scaling back their spending and visits at McDonald’s, prompting the corporation to revamp its menu offerings and promotions.

The coming quarters are expected to see continued momentum, with the upcoming release of the highly anticipated Snack Wrap and a new “McDonaldland” meal targeting nostalgic adults, complete with a mystery-flavored shake. Additionally, McDonald’s plans to revamp its beverage options under the CosMc’s banner at 500 outlets in September following the closure of that spinoff.

Upon market open, McDonald’s (MCD) stock witnessed a surge of over 3%.
