Putin and U.S. Envoy Discuss Ukraine Tensions as Sanctions Deadline Looms
In a constructive and productive meeting, US special envoy Steve Witkoff engaged with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. The Kremlin confirmed the encounter via Russian state media outlet TASS, marking a significant diplomatic exchange amid escalating tensions over Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
The discussions took place under the shadow of an impending sanctions threat from US President Donald Trump, should Russia fail to reach a peace accord with Ukraine. The meeting’s focus was on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as reported by state media outlet RIA Novosti, citing the Kremlin.
According to RIA’s social media post, Putin shared insights on the Ukrainian issue with the United States, and reciprocal signals were received from President Trump. The Kremlin has promised to disclose further details following Witkoff’s report back to Trump.
The meeting spanned approximately three hours, according to state media reports, as per the Russian presidential press service. Upon arrival in Moscow, Witkoff was greeted at the airport by Russia’s investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Footage later shared by the Kremlin depicted Witkoff shaking hands with Putin prior to their private talks.
President Trump’s patience with Russia’s resistance to his peace initiatives has grown thin, particularly in light of Russia’s recent intensified assault on Ukraine, which includes missile and drone attacks on cities. In previous phone conversations, Trump has criticized these actions as “disgusting” and labeled Putin’s explanations as “bullsh*t.”
In anticipation of Wednesday’s meeting, Trump hinted at potential new sanctions against Russia pending the outcome of the negotiations. Speaking at the White House, he stated, “We’re going to see what happens. We’ll make that determination at that time.”
