Five Soldiers Shot at Fort Stewart in Georgia: Active Shooter Apprehended, Lockdown Lifted in Some Areas

In an unexpected incident at Fort Stewart in Georgia, five soldiers were reportedly shot, as confirmed by official updates on the military base’s Facebook page. The precise nature of the soldiers’ injuries remains unclear; however, all injured individuals have been transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for medical attention.

The community is not currently under threat, according to the same source, with the suspect now in custody. Previous reports from law enforcement sources indicate that the shooter no longer poses a risk.

The shooting occurred within the vicinity of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of Fort Stewart, as per updates on the Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield Facebook page. The initial report of a potential shooting was received at 10:56 a.m., prompting an immediate lockdown of the installation eight minutes later. The suspect was apprehended at approximately 11:35 a.m., with the 2nd ABCT complex still under lockdown, although other areas of Fort Stewart have been cleared.

Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, spokesperson for the Fort Stewart Police Department, earlier confirmed an active shooter incident but provided no further details. The ongoing investigation continues to be reported on the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield page.

Fort Stewart is a significant military installation that trains and deploys both active and reserve Army units, serving as home to the 3rd Infantry Division. Located approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia, it is associated with the Hunter Army Airfield within the city itself. Over 10,000 people – soldiers, family members, and Army civilian employees – reside on Fort Stewart or Hunter Army Airfield property, as per the combined post’s website, with more than 25,000 individuals employed by the combined installation.

Agents from the FBI’s Savannah, Georgia office are responding to Fort Stewart and collaborating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division, as confirmed by an FBI Atlanta spokesperson.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences in a statement, stating he was “in close contact” with law enforcement and saddened by the day’s tragedy at Fort Stewart. He urged Georgians to keep the victims, their families, and all who serve in their thoughts and prayers.
