Rep. Nancy Mace Pursues Trump’s Endorsement, Ties Governor Bid Closely to Former President, and Addresses Infrastructure Funding Controversy
In the aftermath of her official announcement to contest for South Carolina’s gubernatorial position, Representative Nancy Mace sought to establish a strong connection with former President Donald Trump during a public gathering attended by supporters this week.
During an event titled “The Mother of All Town Halls,” which took place outside South Carolina’s First Congressional District that Mace has represented since 2020, the three-term congresswoman outlined her plans for governorship and engaged with audience members on various topics. She indicated intentions to host similar events across the state in the future.
Throughout her speech, Mace emphasized her alliance with Trump, particularly referencing a $15 million defamation settlement she received following an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that supported Trump’s presidential library. She stated, “Trump won that defamation suit, and I stand firmly by his side, ensuring unwavering support.”
Mace also expressed her desire for Trump’s endorsement, acknowledging its significance in a competitive Republican gubernatorial primary involving other notable figures such as South Carolina Representative Ralph Norman and Attorney General Alan Wilson. In her speech, Mace mentioned, “I’ve worked diligently to support the president, and should the opportunity arise, I would greatly appreciate his endorsement for my gubernatorial bid.”
Mace also claimed credit for a $195 million infrastructure grant in South Carolina, which was made possible due to former President Joe Biden’s infrastructure law. She emphasized her role in securing this grant, stating, “Despite media silence on the matter, I am among the leading members of Congress who have successfully secured resources for our state.”
Mace faced questions regarding her ability to promote the grant as an accomplishment despite voting against the bill that enabled it. In response, she asserted, “We may disagree on how the funds are allocated, but once appropriations occur, I will ensure South Carolina receives its fair share of funding for our roads and bridges.”
Additionally, Mace voiced her support for Texas’ efforts to redraw its congressional map, expressing a willingness to intervene if necessary. “I would arrest the Texas Legislature if needed, and I support Governor Greg Abbott in his endeavors to establish fair representation,” she stated.
Mace differentiated herself from fellow candidate South Carolina Representative Ralph Norman, who advocated for redrawing South Carolina’s congressional lines. Mace argued that the state’s current lines are sufficient, as Congress does not hold legal authority over their creation. She further clarified, “There must be a seat designated for a Democrat in a predominantly Black district to maintain civil rights and constitutional representation.”
