Trump Announces Upcoming Meeting with Putin in Alaska Amidst Potential Peace Deal Proposal for Ukraine

United States President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday in Alaska, marking a significant development in their relationship. The meeting, scheduled for August 15, 2025, was confirmed by Trump on his Truth Social platform.

The announcement comes after Trump set a deadline for Putin to establish peace or face severe economic consequences. This upcoming summit will be the first time Putin has visited the United States since 2015 and the first meeting between the two leaders since 2018.

Reports suggest that during a meeting in Moscow on Wednesday, Putin presented a plan to halt the ongoing conflict in Ukraine in exchange for substantial territorial concessions by Kyiv. The proposed deal would require Ukraine to relinquish control over the eastern Donbas region, currently occupied by Russia, as well as Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

While the details of this plan are still unclear, it has caused concern among some European officials who fear it could allow Putin to avoid potential sanctions without offering significant concessions in return. However, the plan seems to have initiated discussions leading to the scheduled summit meeting between Trump and Putin.

In the past two days, there have been additional calls between European leaders, including Trump’s foreign envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to discuss the details of this proposed peace deal. Witkoff has reportedly briefed several European officials on the plan’s specifics.

The implications of the proposed deal for two other regions in Ukraine – Zaporizhzhia and Kherson – are yet to be clarified. Similarly, it remains unclear how Putin’s proposal will address his demands for ending the war, such as a pledge that Ukraine will never join NATO or limit the size of its military.

Witkoff has reportedly told European officials that the proposed deal is a step in the right direction and that a more comprehensive peace plan can be negotiated once hostilities cease. The United States is currently attempting to garner support from allies for this plan, though it’s yet to be seen whether they will agree.

The possibility of Russia taking control of Donetsk and Luhansk in a ceasefire deal has raised concerns that such an agreement could encourage future attacks on Ukraine. One European official expressed concern that recognizing territory conquered by force without cost could incentivize further aggression against Ukraine.

Trump, who has expressed frustration with Putin for prolonging the conflict, seems more optimistic about achieving a peace deal. He stated that European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky desire peace, and he believes both Putin and Zelensky share this sentiment.

However, Ukraine ceding any territory to Russia could pose a significant hurdle in negotiating an end to the war. Such concessions would be against the Ukrainian constitution, requiring parliamentary approval or a national referendum before any changes can be made.

Trump has downplayed these concerns, stating that he encouraged Zelensky to expedite the process towards an agreement. Despite earlier threats of new sanctions on Russia if peace was not established by Friday, Trump has since adopted a less confrontational tone, implying that the decision ultimately rests with Putin.

When asked whether Putin would need to meet with Zelensky as a prerequisite for a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin, Trump responded in the negative. The two leaders have met six times during Trump’s first term, primarily at G20 summits and APEC meetings. Their last meeting was in July 2018 in Helsinki, Finland, a summit that sparked controversy due to Trump’s public alignment with Putin over US intelligence agencies.

The last time a United States president met with Putin was in June 2021, during a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, with then-President Joe Biden. CNN contributed to this report with updates on additional developments.
